Sound Planning

Our sequence is filmed with a voiceover instead of dialogue filmed on camera. This is useful because when we start filming in our location, when it will most probably be windy as most of our locations are based outside, we won't have to worry about the volume of the audio and are able to block out all of the wind and background noise of the traffic.

We shall record our dialogue in the media suite completely separately to our recordings, as there isn't any dialogue being filmed at the same time as the film, the viewers will never know the protagonists voice, therefore if Imogen and I record it ourselves, we can create the tone we want for our protagonists story telling.

In terms of sound, we will be inserting foley throughout in order to empathise a very small feature of our film to such a large, busy scene. Here is a list of foley that we intend to use:
  • Wind
  • Heavy breathing
  • Drips of blood
  • Gasps
  • Grass crunching
  • Traffic (cars)
  • Creek of a swing
  • Laughing
However, except from foleys, we will also need music throughout the sequence. We have not yet decided which music track we are going to use yet, but here are some screenshots of research we did into music:

Looking for Foleys

Body Language and Facial Expression

Body Language

Motorway scene
  •  Zoey is looking around throughout this scene therefore her body language would be very free and explorimental
  • When she is looking out onto the motorway, her body language will be closed up as she is telling the audience about her life and will be shy about it
Park flashback scene

  • Both the mum and daughter will be very happy, the body language will be very confident and open
  • When the mum realises she's being watched, her body will tense automatically
Church scene
  • At the start of the church scene, her body language will be closed up and intense so that the audience can grasp that she is feeling overwhelmed and upset
  • As soon as the drop of blood lands on her hand, her body language will changed to frightened, with hard breathing
  • The antagonist's body language will be very closed up and significant however we will overlay a blur onto the antag so you will not be able to see much
Bedroom scene
  • Her body language will be very tense as she is breathing heavy when realising 'it was all a dream'
  • At the sink, zoeys body language will be very chilled out until she realises the blood is very much real

Facial Expression

Motorway scene

  • Zoey's facial expressions will be very closed up yet puzzled whilst telling the audience about her mother and what happened
  • She will be seen to be sad throughout the sequence as she is obviously talking about her dead mother
  • Her eyes will move around a lot yet hold quite long stares for about 2/3 seconds
Park flashback scene
  • Both the mother and daughter will be smiling a lot as they're both enjoying themselves
  • The mum when noticing that she is being watched, her smile will drop and she will become looking like she is very very scared
Church scene
  • At the start again Zoey will have a sad face again as she is at the grave stone, she will look sad yet puzzled and blank
  • She will become suddenly very shocked and worried when she realises there is a man behind her- this will be interpreted through a variety of foleys
Bedroom scene
  • Her facial expression on waking up in a bedroom will be very shocked, possibly quite sweaty and confused
  • When she realises there is blood on her hands and face, she will look absolutely petrified, this will be shown also through make up

Anamatic

For one of our tasks, we got asked to create a analysis video for our storyboard, to explain which shot we intend to use, the length of shot and the details of what is going to happen. Click here to see ours, if not then here is ours:

In terms of the individual timings of each scene, here is another video of us editing how long each clip will last for:

Lighting

Blog Post TWENTY THREE

In our thriller opening we are filming in a variety of locations so each location will have a variety of different lighting.

Motorway

We will be using natural lighting but filming at 6am so we get the natural lighting of the sun rising and this means the traffic will not be as loud as it would at a later time.

Graveyard

Once again we will use natural lighting but film later into the evening to give the graveyard an eerie setting which will emphasise the terror of the dark figured man. We will also use battery powered LED light with filters  because the head stone will not show up on camera without lighting, this lighting will show the importance of the head stone.

Bedroom

When we film in the bedroom when the girl wakes up, we will use battery powered LED light with filters because this will help light the room as natural lighting will not be able to be used as the scene is in the morning but we may not choose to film in the morning.

Synopsis

Blog Post TWENTY TWO

Within our thriller film it is set in Pound Hill, Crawley and it features on a young girl whose grown up orphaned, her Mother disappearing mysteriously when she was little and she never knew who her Father was despite remembering small memories of her when she was little. Within our opening we have decided to keep the audience wanting to find out more about the protagonists' background so that throughout the whole film, slowly but surely certain things give the audience clues.

She explores her memories about her Mother throughout the opening to realise she has always been followed by a dark figure with a scar, we focus a lot on the scar rather than the identity of the figure. Now that she is older, she finds it her mission to find out what really happened to her Mother and find who this dark figure is.

Throughout the film she discovers that the dark figure is actually Father, whom watches her to protect her. The scar that he has on his face has a huge story behind it, an event happened in which her Mother was trapped in a fire and he ran in to save her but failed, leaving him with a scar as he needed surgery with how much the burns had impacted him. Her mother ended up dying sadly within the fire. When she is finally reunited with her Father, he is killed, leaving the film on a cliff hanger. He is killed as he goes back to the motor way location that the protagonist starts on and dies at the exact same time and date in which the mother died. This leaves the audience on a cliff hanger again as we would not show how he died, just the location and the time.

Make Up

Make Up

Antagonist
For our Antagonist, we want there to be a big reveal towards the end of the scene to what the man actually looks like. However, we want the audience to be shocked or somewhat disgusted with the appearance that they will be presented with. Therefore, we want a scar or make up that creates enigma. Making the audience question why their face is so messed up or what happened to make it that bad.

We were thinking in terms of practicality that the middle one would be the best to put on our antagonist as it creates a huge amount of enigma yet shows that this specific accident happened a long time ago as there is no longer any bruising, rather than the first and last photo that shows this happening fairly recently

In order to make the scar realistic we will take guidance from this you tube tutorial, click here to see the tutorial. This open wound and burned scar will need practise so we will perform a dummy run to see how it looks and to see if the actor has any allergic reactions to the ingredients.

Ingredients to create the scar look

  • A dark red lip liner
  • Sculpt gel
  • Translucent setting powder
  • Black eyeshadow
  • Red eyeliner
  • Foundation or Concealer
  • Fake blood
  • Nude lip gloss

I will purchase a red lip liner from Superdrug to create the outline of the scar, the lip liner is only £1.99.

Instead of using sculpt gel as it is really expensive, i have found a method to create the wound with Vaseline, here is a step by step guide which i will follow to make the wound.
http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Fake-Wound

I can buy vaseline from Tesco's for £2

I will buy loose setting powder from Superdrug as it is only £1.99

I already own black eyeshadow

I already own red eye liner

I already own foundation and concelear

I already own fake blood

I will purchase a nude lipgloss from Superdrug for £1.

Protagonist
As for our protagonist, we want the main character to be a little girl, around the age of 10-13. In terms of make up here, we want to go very natural as she is only young. Imogen and I decided that the minimal amount of make up would probably be best for this character as again, she is only young therefore the use of make up would make the character not seem younger than she already is.

Here you can see in the photos above that all the girls' faces are quite pale and their cheeks are rosy and light. This is the kind of look we want the protagonist to be based from. Then the audience will see the protagonist as innocent.

Location

Blog Post NINETEEN

For our main thriller sequence, we want to use a variety of locations in order to create as much effect as we can. As we have the baseline for our sequence already, here is a few different location ideas we want to/would like to use:

Locations:

Amy's bedroom

Grattons Park
This is a park near Amy's house. We will only need to use a swing in the park. As it is a public place we will not need permission to film here.

Worth walk over
This is near Amy's house. As this is a cycle and dog walking path that conveniently is above the M25, this is one of the main locations we want to put in our thriller opening to go alongside with our plot that you will see more in-depth in our planning, click here to see that specific blog post.  And again, as this is public land, we don't need permission

St. Nicholas Church
As obviously a church is a private, and rather spiritual area, we need permisson in order to film here as obviously it'll affect the families of all those that have died here. However, as one of my family memories (Amy's) has been buried here, we are going to use some shots of a tomb stone in order to create the atmosphere that we aim to get across to the audience. However, as again, it is private land, we need permission in order to film here and inside of the St. Nicolas Church.

Here is our email to the Church, hopefully they will get back to us soon otherwise we will have to go elsewhere.

Here is a phone call granting us permission to film

This is the website with the contact information for the Church, click here to see the website.

One of my friends that I met whilst working at Tulleys Farm Shocktober is a make up artist for SFX. Imogen and I thought that she particualrly would be the best person to do our make up for the protagonist as there will be a big reveal eventually at the end of the thriller opening. Also, she can make a young boy look like an old man and it is genuinely thrilling to watch as we are trying to make our thriller as realistic and prefessional as possible.

Click here for our make up orientated blogpost

Actors:

Antagonist: Aaron Hayton
Little girl: Eleanor Hayton
Older protagonist: Molly Newark
Mother figure: Imogen Evans

Permisson: Aaron and Eleanor (both in one)

Preliminary Task #2

Blog Post FIFTHEEN

As we didn't prove that we could do a SRS in our prelimary task, we decided to film another sequence to prove we can film and edit it. This was so that we could pass our prelim task in order to start planning our final thriller sequence so here is our shot-reverse-shot conversation between a female and male character having a typical day-to-day conversation.

Research Task by Imogen Evans 2/4

Blog Post TEN

The second thriller opening I looked at was Pulp Fiction, click here to see the opening.

Camera Work
  • Over The Shoulder Shot used to give a perspective of what is happening from the actors view, makes the scene more intense.
  • Close Up used to establish the facial expressions
  • Mid Shot is used through out the opening, to see the body language of the actors
  • Low Angle when standing on the table to show their authority over the people in the Diner.

Editing
  • Shot reverse shot is used through the scene between the actors to make the audience feel they are watching the conversation
  • Slow Cuts are used to keep the pace of the scene, as the scene gets more dramatic the pace of the cuts speeds up
  • A Slow Zoom to the face to show the sincerity of the conversation
Mise en Scene
  • Props include cigarettes, mugs and sugar shakers, this helps establish the atmosphere of the 90's Diner as smoking inside was prohibited
  • Ringo has a khaki shirt and slicked back hair which represents the 90's time period in outfits. Yolanda's outfit is a plain long sleeved T-Shirt and a necklace
  • Ringo's facial expressions are confused and angry but eases up when he talks to the woman, he tends to scrunch up his face out of boredom and frustration but relaxes
  • His body language is constantly slouched but at ease, he has his leg up which shows he is a relaxed man
  • Yolanda's facial expressions are constantly happy, she is grinning but then contrasts to looking confused at the man's plans
  • Her body language is upright with a good posture, this shows she is eager and ready to go
  • The settings of the scene is a typical 90's diner with leather seats and the lighting is daylight so bright
Sound
  • Diner music such as coffee cups clinking and cutlery noises are used in the background of the opening, this helps set the atmosphere of the scene
  • Dialogue is the main sound through out the scene as it makes the scene more normal
  • Foley is used when the gun is slammed onto the table, this emphasises the importance of the gun
  • The sound is calm through out the scene until it gets to when they start to rob the Diner, the pace fastens
